What Is CBD Oil And What’s It Used For?

CBD oil is a hot topic in the medical and cosmetic world, especially as more and more states are legalizing the use of medical and recreational marijuana products. Despite its increasing recognition, though, CBD oils are still not totally understood.

Let’s dive into what CBD oil really is and what it’s being used for—and also how you can use CBD oil in your life.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is extracted from the cannabis plant’s flowers and buds. There are two types of cannabis: indica and sativa. Marijuana can be classified in either type, while hemp is specifically a member of cannabis sativa.

Hemp contains a low concentration of THC, typically less than 0.3%. This means there is generally no detection of THC in hemp-derived CBD oil. When extracted from marijuana plants, though, there can be a higher detectable concentration of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). At 7 Points Natural we offer hemp-derived nutraceuticals to provide a quality concentration of CBD.

The cannabidiol is then diluted in a carrier oil, like coconut oil or hemp seed oil. This makes it safe for consumption and topical use. Different carrier oils can also have different effects, so it’s important to be aware of how your CBD is diluted.

CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It’s one of the non-psychoactive compounds from this plant. That high everyone associates with marijuana actually comes from THC, not CBD. CBD won’t get you high.

Is CBD oil legal?

Even though CBD is non-intoxicating, it’s still legal only in those states that have legalized medical and/or recreational marijuana or those that have laws particularly for CBD. So far, CBD usage is legal in 30 states with an additional 17 states that have CBD-specific laws.

In 2018, Congress also passed the Farm Bill, which legalized hemp as an agricultural commodity. There are still some regulations and restrictions on hemp, but it’s quickly becoming a more prominent part of our everyday lives.

How does CBD work?

Here’s what we know so far. In the 1980s and 1990s, researchers discovered the endocannabinoid system. This is a bodily functional system, similar to the nervous system or immune system. It includes an entire network of cannabinoid receptors throughout the body that impact different functions, like sleep, appetite, pain, immune response, mental functionality, and more.

CBD is a phytocannabinoid, a cannabinoid that comes from a plant (“phyto”). It interacts with those cannabinoid receptors that are part of the endocannabinoid system. These cannabinoids in CBD may interact with this system to improve sleep, minimize appetite, regulate pain, and maintain a healthy immune response.

The most important takeaway: there are cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. This means CBD could potentially have a total systemic effect, which is why it’s been gaining popularity in the healthcare world recently.

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

More and more research is coming out that CBD oil could have a lot of serious health benefits, for both topical and ingested use. Below are just a few of the ways CBD oil is being used to treat medical conditions.

1. Pain relief

A look into old writings shows us that CBD oil has been used to treat pain since 2900 B.C. Studies show that CBD helps lower inflammation and interrupt pain receptors, which can help minimize acute and chronic pain. In animal studies, CBD injections reduced acute pain from surgical incisions and also decreased nerve pain and inflammation.

There is also some evidence that CBD suppresses the production of cytokines, the proteins that initiate pathologic pain through neurons. Fewer cytokines means less pain.

A number of researchers have concluded CBD is an effective pain management solution—especially since it has so few adverse side effects. It’s particularly useful for those with back, neck, joint, or muscle pain that are related to inflammation.

Some individuals claim to effectively use CBD oil for arthritis. One study found it improved pain, at both movement and rest, associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Research in 2016 found CBD reduced inflammation in pain associated with arthritis, and a 2017 study found it may even help slow nerve damage in osteoarthritis.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, women of all ages are using CBD oil to regulate menstrual-related pain. Some women claim that rubbing CBD oil on the pelvis or taking a few drops eases their cramps and PMS symptoms.

2. Lessen multiple sclerosis pain

Several studies have shown that CBD and THC together is an effective way to treat pain related to multiple sclerosis (MS). Research shows that cannabidiol can improve mobility in people with MS. One study looked specifically at Sativex, which is a CBD-THC duo approved in several countries to treat MS. The study found that Sativex improved pain and muscle spasms in MS patients after just one month.

3. Treat epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases

In June 2018, the FDA cleared a CBD oral solution as an effective treatment for epilepsy and seizures. Research found that CBD supplementation reduced seizure strength and frequency by nearly 36%. Similarly, studies show that CBD can improve quality of life for Parkinson’s patients and prevent neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

How does this work? Research suggests that endocannabinoid receptors in the brain may reduce inflammation and regulate the immune response. The anti-inflammatory cannabinoids in CBD oil may interact with brain receptors to minimize the inflammation response that leads to neurodegenerative diseases.

4. Diminish anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression are serious epidemics in America, and their drug treatments are often addictive with a lot of side effects. Some studies show that cannabidiol has an antidepressant and anxiolytic-like effect, making it a potential alternative to prescription antidepressants. This may work because CBD has been shown to act on the brain receptors that control serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates mood and social behavior.

CBD may even help you speak in public better! One study found that CBD supplementation before public speaking reduced anxiety, discomfort, and cognitive impairment.

5. Alleviate cancer-related symptoms

Medical marijuana has been used for cancer patients for years, and it’s becoming an even more popular method across the country. One study looked at cancer patients who weren’t getting relief from pain medication. Not only did cannabis supplementation drastically improve their pain, but patients given both CBD and THC had greater reduction in pain than those who received only THC extract. Researchers also found that CBD and THC helped reduce nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy better than standard treatment alone.

6. Improve heart health

Research shows that CBD may help lower blood pressure and improve the circulatory system. In one study, healthy men were given 600mg of CBD oil and put through a stress test. The CBD reduced their resting blood pressure and minimized the increase in blood pressure during the stress test. The researchers attributed this to the possible anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects of cannabidiol.

7. Reduce acne

Because of CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties, it may help regulate hormonal and cystic acne. Studies show that topical CBD oil helps regulate sebum protection and prevent pro-acne agents, like inflammatory cytokines. CBD oil is a great solution for adult acne-sufferers who haven’t seen relief through other natural methods and don’t want harsh prescription-grade acne medication.

8. Improving sleep quality

Studies show that CBD oil can help improve sleep quality in those suffering from insomnia, especially those who have insomnia induced by pain or anxiety. One study found that sleep scores improved in the first month and anxiety scores kept decreasing throughout the study duration. They concluded that cannabidiol may benefit anxiety-related disorders, which can help improve sleep quality and quantity in tandem.
